Review of Bugsy (1991) by Jack G — 30 Nov 2008
Not exactly a great mob film, but it has brilliant moments and scenes (I love when Beatty, after making the one guy bark like a dog for stealing, sits down and shovels food in his mouth while Bening, turned on, keeps trying to make out with him while he still shovels food).
What makes it work is that it's not even so much always about the mob but about obsession, and there's a sensibility to making movies that's reflected in the character of Bugsy - there's not much difference between him and Michael Cimino on the set of Heaven's Gate (and, consequently, neither really had totally positive results for their creators' obsessions).
Also, great supporting work all around, particularly by Eliot Gould in his two scenes.
