Review of Buffet Froid (1979) by Dan B — 24 Nov 2008
Surreal black comedy of a kind that seems typically and uniquely French. (It is adored in its home country.) The plot isn't much to speak of - it's really all about the dialogue and the performances (all of which are superb), and an overall tone of deadpan irritability.
Special mention too for the cinematography which manages to make everything look slightly alien; whether its the dehumanized construction of La Defense, or a bridge across a gorge of tremendous natural beauty, the visuals perfectly match the mood, with everything feeling ever so slightly askew.
If you like French cinema, this is pretty much a must see.
