Review of Buffalo '66 (1998) by Jonatthan E — 22 Jul 2011
I'm a little lost for words when it comes to this film. I first saw this movie years ago. And even now it still takes me by surprise. Everything that happens in this movie feels significant. And that's an extremely rare quality in a film.
Gallo's Buffalo 66 is organic and somewhat whimsical, even in all it's wretchedness. It's almost as if I'm transported into this whole world that Gallo has found in 1998's Buffalo, NY - and I don't want to think there is place like this.
Yet it feels completely existent. And instead of travelling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland, I've found myself in a gritty Buffalo, the anti fairy-tale. There's so much crammed into this little indie gem by Writer/Director Vincent Gallo (who also stars in the lead role).
This dark comedy is one of the few movies that will make me laugh out loud anymore - and consistently. Having seen this before I knew what to expect, and in all honesty my fondness of this film is justified years later.
If anything, it more than lived up to my expectations. A great film and a personal favorite.
