Review of Bubba Ho-tep (2002) by Dustin A — 01 Jan 2009
By description this picture sounds like it should be ridiculous...and on the surface the puzzle pieces are...A soul sucking mummy...A retirement home bound Elvis...Giant bugs..and a wheel chair bound black man who thinks he's JFK.
The genre defying result is much more poignant. Director Don Coscarelli deft hand guides the film from scares to genuinely moving drama all the while aided by a tour deforce performance by Bruce Campbell.
Those expecting Evil Dead style shenangans will be disappointed. This movie is much more bizarre...much harder to catagorize...and much more moving.
