Review of Brother Bear (2003) by Rebecca P — 08 Sep 2012
This was a great insightful movie for me and my family. Iâ(TM)m in school studying world religions and we are currently learning about indigenous religions and their sacred ways. The movie really showed me about the people and their beliefs when it came to their sacred ways and traditions.
The ceremony in becoming a man and receiving his totem bear of love was interesting. Then how his oldest brother spared his own life for his younger siblings was special. I thought it was fascinating that the deceased brotherâ(TM)s spirit came down and changed the youngest brother into a bear simply because he defined nature out of anger and killed the bear that was involved with his death.
It was neat to see later in the movie how all along both the bears and man considered one another monsters and a danger to each other. The movie also helped show us to love unconditionally and to treat all living things equal.
I myself just really enjoyed this film. For the indigenous religion part there was a shaman woman who was the tribeâ(TM)s connection between the earth and the spirit world. Then the movie displayed the tribeâ(TM)s dancers and drummers for the totem coming of age ritual and how the tribe celebrated this tradition.
The movie also mentioned the Great Spirit and the connection between man and earth, and lastly the vision quest the youngest brother has to go through a the bear. The movie and the chapter that I am studying have both hit home for me and I can somewhat understand all the stories and teaching Iâ(TM)ve heard my whole life from family members, for I too am Native American.
The movie made me feel good about my ancestors and people because it showed so much love in this movie. Even in the beginning when the brothers didnâ(TM)t love the bears, they had to face some challenges to understand them better and begin to love them.
I would buy this movie. My husband and children really enjoyed it too. â"Rebecca Peov.
