Review of Brooklyn (2015) by Carolina C — 06 Mar 2016
A very enjoyable drama, the type of which you don't see a lot of at the cinemas these days. The film captures the pre rock 'n' roll era very well and doesn't bang you over the head with references to the time period in an attempt to remind you it's 1952.
Saoirse Ronan is very good as a young girl who leaves Ireland for America. The film is broken up into three sections, her home life in Ireland where she has nothing, her life in America where she finds a life for herself and love, and then her return to Ireland and a possible sudden change of direction for her as she becomes unsure of what to do.
The film works very well, however, the first section felt a little under developed, which impacts somewhat on the third section. But that's really just nit picking and the film is a great break from the usual cinema experience of explosions and mayhem, even if I was sitting there wishing it was Batman v Superman instead...
