Review of Brooklyn (2015) by Laura L — 27 Jan 2016
Very much in the vain of great films like The King's Speech, An Education, & The Imitation Game, Brooklyn both awes and surprises. We very quickly recognize the many romantic platitudes and clichà (C)s of falling in love, being homesick, and growing up, but the movie itself transcends and reasserts all these classic themes in a way that feels fresh, unique, and downright believable.
You feel Alish's pain and sympathize with her struggle between her old life and her new one. Ultimately, this film does so well what so many other period dramas get wrong. The premise is clear. The motivations of the characters and their behaviors are justified and authentic.
Humor is sprinkled throughout. And the costuming and styles truly make you experience what it would have been like to grow up in the 1950's. Brooklyn is classic filmmaking at it's best and should go down as one of the best stories ever told in the last few years.
A part of you will wish that they would make a sequel and continue this story. Leave it to imagination.
