"Brooklyn" could be your other average chick-flick - nothing wrong with that! - all the 'feelz', some tears, hopefully a happy ending. It delivers much more: a kick-ass front-woman, who takes her life in her own hands in a not-so-very-1950s way; well-developed supporting characters; and a subtle, modulated understanding of what it means to be an emigrant trying to find home.
