Review of Bronson (2009) by The D — 18 Oct 2011
Pulsating prisoner drama based on a true story brought to life by Drive's Nicolas Winding Refn.
Tom Hardy brilliantly plays Michael Petersen later to become Charles Bronson as advised by his fight promoter(Matt King, Super Hands from Peep Show).
The story chronicles his time in incarceration, totalling 34 years the vast majority being in complete isolation. Wanting to see his name in lights & with such limited options to achieve this he decides the only way is extreme violence. He batters & bruises his way through his prison/mental institution years.
Told to an audience by Bronson himself, the story is vivid & graphic but never over the top to the more discerning viewer. Hardy gives an eccentric but still brutal edge to the character & you can see his choice as Bane to be quite natural.
There is no real support to speak of except in the latter stages from James Lance you will know from many sit-coms such as I'm Alan Partidge.
A compelling 90 minutes viewing & an outstanding film.
