Review of Broken Flowers (2005) by Alison O — 12 Oct 2008
A great little movie. Jarmusch, with Hal Hartley and the Coens and other early American independent filmmakers, can be filed under that special heading of directors whose stamp is undeniable from frame 1.
Murray's somber schtick never gets old, but Jeffrey Wright as Winston, the would-be Sam Spade, is just great; he's such an underrated actor, and I wish he would get more work beyond little turns as Felix Lighter in the new Bond films.
And what a wonderful selection of actresses. The scene with Frances Conroy is painfully awkward and priceless. Jarmusch is bold to end the film the way he does, and it shouldn't feel like closure, but it does, oddly, sort of summing up the 'aged Don Juan' thesis.
