Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Jeff T — 01 Jan 2010
There's a strange comfort in getting what you expect from Pedro Almodovar. His newest is not his greatest, but it's no step backwards, either. Hitchcockian score and plotting, vivid colors and characters and gulping twists and turns, BROKEN EMBRACES is solid and strong Pedro.
If it seems a little less-than because of the navel-gazing nature of making a film about filmmaking, that's a forgivable sin because it's all done so stylishly, so entertainingly, so Almodovar-ly.
And how many good years can Penelope Cruz have? Hopefully many - she just gets better and more beautifuller.
