Review of Broken Embraces (2009) by Aaron B — 29 Apr 2010
Almodovar's movies tell such wonderful stories. I found All About My Mother, my first Almodovar movie, touching and beautiful. This movie nearly reaches the same heights of storytelling. The plot reveals itself slowly, and the actors are so good that the plot hardly matters, only how the characters react to it.
If anything holds it back from being great, it's the sudden, uncathartic ending that Almodovar has become so bogged down in since Volver. I'm glad Penelope Cruz is his muse because she's quite an actress, but I hope in the future he gives her a more deserved ending.
