Review of Broken City (2013) by Ryan K — 07 May 2013
Script is written as a corruption film but jumbles far too many emotions. One of Wahlberg's weakest roles in recent years as it is obvious he found no connection to the character or the films direction.
Crowe is mediocre in his part but does not shine as he would with a powerful screenplay. He is entertaining when rambling but the writing is ignorant without strongly enough convincing an egotistical mayor of New York.
_ is down right terrible and is set up as a hilarious joke playing an actress. The movie could have gone in any direction, it seems like script decisions were made by multiple choice. Humor falls short.
Strengthens towards a half hour in but loses that plot push that was on an incline. The relationship between Wahlberg and _ is horrendous (watching her have sex on screen? Drinking?). The first twist wasn't completely absurd but messy in more than one sense.
The ending twist was the only think that kept it a bad movie and not a horrid one.
