Review of Brokeback Mountain (2005) by Martin R — 25 Oct 2013
10/26/13: With all of the attention and controversy surrounding "Brokeback Mountain," I wasn't sure I'd ever get to see it (actually, I wasn't sure if I'd feel comfortable enough to sit through the whole thing as I am a former Catholic).
Well, outside of the possible animal cruelty scenes, there's not much by way of controversy here. Two heterosexual(?) men fall in love and for reasons of societal prejudice, they choose to "keep it on the low" and live "normal lives".
..but they really can't. There were a few very powerful scenes--especially with the way that Heath Ledger gasps for air during the more intense parts--that just make your fists want to pound on something.
Moreover, I feel the that the acclaim for this movie is centered on the fact that the film's about two males that fall in love because I felt that "Brokeback Mountain" could have been shorter and more compelling.
It was late last night, I was tired, the film kept me awake but I can't say that I'd be interested in watching it again (and it is Not because of elk shooting or the mishandling of the sheep).
I'm more than sure that some 40 years from now, folks will look back and think, "man, Brokeback Mountain is good but...it could have been better.".
