Review of Brokeback Mountain (2005) by Byron B — 06 May 2014
This hard-hitting drama covers over 20 years in the lives of Ennis Del Mar (Ledger) and Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal). I didn't think the makeup was always the best when it came to aging the young actors, but the whole cast is able to bring the characters to life incredibly anyway.
I found it interesting that from the settings of Wyoming to Texas and the 1960s to the 1980s the style of vehicles and clothing made almost no changes. Screen writing partners Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry adapted the short story.
They did an excellent job fleshing out the two men and their family lives. They did an exceptional job capturing the speech and interactions between late-twentieth-century cowboys and their world. The film intends, I think, to open our eyes to the unacknowledged fact that homosexuality has always existed, but was shamed and hidden.
It's about the pain of being ostracized and the love one can find, though it is not an easy.
