This is the second Brooks rom com, with great performances (go Holly!) but a rather weak story and some mildly funny jokes.

The film's center, wether the Academy likes it or not, is Holly Hunter, in the best role of the film, playing Jane, the controlling smart news producer who falls for the remarkably dimwitted Tom (played unusually unwell by Bill Hurt) while completely oblivious of her best friend (played rather well by Al Brooks)'s affections for her. And the film plays out as a rom com. What I was expecting was Network + Annie Hall, what I got was As Good As It Gets + a news station. Though I must say I find that I partly enjoy both for different reasons, this film I liked a bit less because all it's really got to run on is performances and nothing much else. My faves are Holly Hunter, in a role I can't help but compare to Faye Dunaway's in Network, and Joan Cusack and her fantastic running scene. Al Brooks was fine but one of the most overrated people ever, William Hurt, did a rather mediocre job. Does this seem like a role worthy of an Oscar nom? I think not.

The whole movie I was just waiting for Jane to dump that asshole Tom and go for Aaron but itnever happened. And I guess that sort of ruined the movie for me. I've always thought Brooks' best work was on The Simpsons and I guess this proves me right..
