Review of Bringing Up Baby (1938) by Patrick B — 30 May 2009
There's really not a whole lot to say about this one except that it's probably one of the greatest comedies ever! Period! It's perfect! Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn just banter back and forth through the entire film, and it's just fascinating stuff because they have unbelievable chemistry, and every line is delivered with perfect comedic timing. Like most screwball comedies and farces, the situation starts out ridiculous and just builds from there, oh and this film hits you with everything. There are mistaken identities, lost leopards, and Cary Grant at his scatterbrained funniest. If I were to meet a person like Katherine Hepburn's Susan, she'd probably annoy the hell out of me, but under the hands of Hepburn, Susan's antics are hysterical. She gives David (Cary Grant) the hardest time; she steals his golf ball, dents his cars, rips his jacket, and that's just in the first 15 minutes.
Truthfully, Bringing Up Baby is a classic that all ages can enjoy. In terms of screwball comedies, there is nothing screwier or funnier than Bringing Up Baby.
