Review of Bringing Out the Dead (1999) by Jay V — 06 Jul 2009
Ahhh... Another Scorsese film.Basically a darkly humorous Taxi Driver on crack. Nicolas Cage is a paramedic who drives up and down Hell's Kitchen and deals with what seems to be a New York City that is entirely filled with crackwhores, crazy people, and well.
. just a bunch of crackwhores and crazy people I guess. The overall style of this film is very frantic and the lighting throughout seems as though it is a character itself, since everything is lit amazingly.
Nicolas Cage proves that if he is given the right material and works with an amazing director, he can actually be quite good. And Ving Rhames plays (in my opinion) one of his best roles as a god-loving paramedic who's eccentric behavior makes him the best of the paramedics that Cage is teamed up with.
The music in this is the usual overload of Rolling Stones songs that is apparent in most Scorsese fiilms, with the exception of an oddly placed pop song in one part. A problem I had with this film would have to be the pacing of the film.
It tends to go really fast and then slow down with one of Cage's voiceover narrations. Uneven in parts but engrossing.
