Review of Bringing Out the Dead (1999) by Jonny B — 08 Aug 2011
Come on Schrader, you can do better than this. 'Bringing Out the Dead' ditches the depth of 'Taxi Driver' in favour for some bland observations and an explosion of religious symbolism. With that said, Cage is outstanding as is Goodman and Sizemore.
Scorsese is all over the map here. It's unclear if he wants to keep going overboard with amphetamine spiked editing or if he wants to not be so much of a showoff and focus on story, character, and themes (no matter how religious they are).
Still, somehow this movie has the power to be exciting, stylish, and has tons of great music, tons.
