Review of Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) by Aaron G — 11 Sep 2008
Peckinpah's grittiest film is a contemporary anti-Western that divided critics and filmgoers alike when it was released in 1974. Now it's just a masterpiece. It's undoubtedly his most personal film, with Oates, in subtle, brilliant form here as the Peckinpah incarnate.
Dark shades, white suit, Tequila bottle in grasp; Pecks was so gutted by the studio "suits" that it slowly drove him insane. The disillusionment of both Peckinpah and the Americas has never been more evident here.
A horrific portrayal of feverish desperation that has a cancerous conclusion. Marvelous!
