Review of Brighton Rock (2010) by Darren H — 06 Jun 2011
While stylisticly, the film worked on many levels with the period of 1960's Brighton was convincing (apparently there were some buildings in the background that did not exist in the 60's, but since I don't know Brighton that well, I'll let that slide) with the costumes and the mods and rockers clashes at Brighton Beach.
What I did not like was how miserable it all was. Non of the characters semmed at all interesting to me. Dramatically, I thought it was stagnant all the way through and I did not care for the characters, especially Pinky.
I thought he was an awful person with no redeeming qualities, which an anti hero needs! Helen Mirren tries hard but did not save the film. Not enjoyable or emotionally engaging, I think this is yet another remake that did not need to happen.
