Review of Brighton Rock (1948) by Andrew H — 13 Nov 2009
A very well acted gangster thriller which has some very good scenes and a strong leading cast. The story however isn't not the worlds best it has a lot to do with cards being left in certain places and there is no real introduction to the story; you feel as through you have just been dropped into it. The story does pick up a bit in the middle with the scenes at Brighton Racecourse and the scene in the recording booth all of which are excellent. The ending of the film is absolutely superb. The suspense is fantastic!
Richard Attenborough is superb as the cold hearted psychopathic young gangster extremely well. He has the right look about him and he delivers his dialogue extremely well; especially in the scene in the recording booth. Carol Marsh plays Rose very well as a bit of a pathetic, wet-blanket girl and at first I did not believe this was particularly good but when put up against Richard Attenborough as the hard, cold Pinkie it works really well as it shows Attenborough as more mean!
In conclusion although there is not much of a story at the beginning of the film it slowly picks up. It is Richard Attenborough's superb acting and the very suspenseful ending which makes this film a very enjoyable thriller.
