Review of Bright Young Things (2003) by Mister C — 25 Jan 2005
I really wanted to like this directorial effort from Stephen Fry. While the first 40 minutes were a fun, vivacious romp, I felt that the movie collapsed with its diametric tonal shift in the middle of the movie.
I didn't feel that the either the writing or the performances in the second half provided the dramatic drive that the material needed; I also didn't appreciate the picture-perfect ending. Nevertheless, there are some nice performances, especially a delightful 5-minute cameo from Peter O'Toole, playing a senile, wealthy old man whose daughter the protaginist seeks to wed.
