Review of Bright Young Things (2003) by Garrick J — 22 Jun 2008
Thank heavens the Americans did not attempt to make this film. On second thoughts, I am sure that they would not have understood the book, nor found the concept behind it commercial enough. Stephen Fry's direction is madcap enough to capture the "Noel Coward on steroids" atmosphere of this story, written in 1924, but set in an unspecified future.
The movie is beautifully acted, dressed and captured. Zany, zany, zany....some marvelous wit, and clever use of music to highlight subtities...for instance the Coward song "Nina from Argentina" as a background when the hero arrives at his fiancee's house to tell her that her father has given him a cheque.
...I grinned a lot during this film.
