Review of Bright Star (2009) by Jenni F — 09 May 2010
I think it deserved slightly more attention than I gave it--I admit I was multitasking--but in general I thought it was lovely. Some people I read said it was cold, not passionate, blah blah blah. But that's sort of the point of it--Keats and Brawne were in a time where it wasn't acceptable to show "passionate" love for each other, and yet their romance WAS that passionate, despite being relatively lacking in physical affection.
The attention is all in the details because it's all very subtle--the looks, the subtext in their speech, and especially the poetry. What I do wish for was a little more explanation about who everyone was and how they all related to each other, which I may have gotten if I was paying full attention, and it was a little heavy on the melodramatic lovers' tantrums, but I feel that was more than made up for in the scene where Fanny found out Keats died.
I'm tearing up remembering it right now...
