Review of Bright (2017) by Matthew L — 04 Feb 2018
I watched this movie with my wife last night. I thought it was a fascinating idea full of promise and if handled correctly might make a great franchise going forward. I thought Will Smith did an outstanding job and I look forward to more character development with his orc buddy. I thought it had a lot in common with Alien Nation but didn't trod over it too badly. I don't mind the dismal portrayal of humanity or the dark spaces it explored but then I really enjoy dystopian cinema.
I do think it could have been balanced better. The elf squad laying waste to heavily armed gangs and cops before being quickly dispatched by the two injured heroes was borderline ridiculous and I do have a few other complaints but I enjoyed the movie thoroughly.
Regarding the critical disconnect in this case? Well you can't start a movie out with "Trigger warning productions" and then follow it with a joke about fairy lives don't matter without earning the wrath of the communications major SJWs that hold all the mainstream media writing jobs. This film was certainly not intended for that audience and I'm glad it wasn't.
