Review of Bright (2017) by Michael P — 25 Dec 2017
I saw the trailers and I was intrigued, and I liked it when I saw it. I liked the Los Angeles cop narrative with the juxtaposition of Elves, Orcs, Fairies, and other fantasy aspects. I liked the world that they crafted and, by the end of the movie, I wanted to know more about this world.
1 Star for the acting. Everyone was great in this story. Another star for the plot. The plot line would have worked if the object of interest was two million dollars, or a large cache of drugs. Another star for the action.
The action in the movie is spot-on for the setting, and almost over-the-top. It is reminiscent of John Wu movies, or scenes from John Wick. And a fourth star for the humor and pacing. There are a lot of jokes here, that rely on Will Smith's comedic timing playing off of his Orc partner's naivete.
The movie also leaves the plot open for a future sequel set in the same world. There are deliberate questions left unanswered, that serves to draw you in. Critics panned it, but some of that is disingenuous, as Netflix is directly challenging the status quo.
The people have spoken - it's a good movie.
