Review of Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (2009) by Zoran S — 24 Sep 2009
I suppose this is an interesting attempt but it is not very good. It's a huge mess structurally, overly staged, and lacks the compassion by which Wallace treats even his most flawed characters. Maybe you can't really make a movie out of the his Brief Interviews monologues/ stories but you can make a less literal minded one than this.
Among the many mistakes the film makes is its attempt to give some character to the anonymous woman interviewing the men. However, she really just comes off a blank cipher making her a structural device rather than a person.
Why does she date "hideous men" if she's so intelligent? What led her too this stage in life? If you are going to introduce her into the monologues, then she at least should be less generic.
