Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Kate L — 07 Aug 2007
Each time I see this movie I appreciate it more. Beautifully shot by David Lean, with story-telling techniques and camera tricks that were ahead of their time. Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard both act their hearts out-saying even more with eyes and body language than they do with their dialogue, so that you feel their despair.
The narration from Johnson is so perfectly delivered and poetically beautiful that you can forgive her character for being a bit posh. The gorgeous music (Rachmaninov) is so perfectly matched to the mood of the movie throughout that it seems it was almost written for the film.
The comic relief is also brilliantly done and still funny after all this time.
