David Lean's poignant fable is an ode to innocence. After all the 'Indecent Proposals' and 'Unfaithfuls' it is clear that the world of 'Brief Encounter' no longer exists. This is an extremely bourgeoise, extremely British and extremely subtle, multi-layered love story - one in which grace and dignity triumphs over passion.
Controversially, I'd like to say that the film's true love story is actually between the woman and her husband. The illicit semi-affair with Trevor Howard is merely a means to an end. The encounter is brief, yes, but that's the whole beauty of it.
