Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard's illicit love affair is carried out under exuberant lighting - never has the white of Johnson's alabaster skin looked so white, never has the dark of night looked so dark.
.. Everywhere there is smoke - trains, cigarettes, warm breath in the evening air - the smoke of something which once was hot and passionate, and which has now evaporated into a very British coolness; the kind of smoke which vanishes into nothing.
After all the spoofing and parody, it's heartening to see the film stands up to another viewing, sixty years down the line.
