Noel Coward's smart, unpatronizing script and David Lean's sure direction amount to a romance that achieves its payoffs through the characters' decidedly realistic and nuanced interaction through the course of the movie.
The Rachmaninov score elevates the material further, but its Celea Johnson's heartrending performance that leaves the viewer breathless.
