Review of Brief Encounter (1945) by Settimio P — 02 Dec 2008
We associate David Lean with grand scale epic films such as Bridge Over the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia but what he gives us in this quixotic masterpiece is an un-assuming film about restricted romance between a man and a married woman.
Celia Johnson plays Laura Jesson, a despondent wife and mother who feels her life has become one big routine with little to no emotional chemistry with her husband. The pain and guilt of her character is projected directly from the eyes of Johnson who defines her tortured character in a much understated manner.
Trevor Howard who plays Dr. Alec Harvey is charming and persistently enamored by Jesson. There is a connection that is undeniable. The film has held up perfectly over sixty years. For one hour and twenty six minutes, Brief Encounter is one of the very best love stories on film.
