Far and away the best of david leans movies in my opinion. I never connected with his epics but leans early work like this and even great expectations (of which the source material for I find almost loathsome) are very well constructed and dont outdo themselves.
this in particular is a tragic modern love story. and trevor howard and celia johnson make it work. its based on the noel coward play, still life and the music which is one of the elements of the film that elevates into an experience is thanks to the work of sergei rachmaninoff.
its a beautifully shot film with beautiful characters.
