Review of Bridget Jones's Baby (2016) by Natalie O — 17 Nov 2016
I watched this because I was ill, and really, not even that is an excuse. I read the first two books and watched the first two films. By the time the third book came round, I had personally grown past BJ and her insecurities so I didn't bother reading it.
Went straight to the movie instead and boy was I right. How, in more than a decade has BJ changed so little? She is totally devoid of character development and for this reason still holds herself to pretty low standards.
Now, I am no bra-burning femenist, but why did she have to work so hard to find out who the father was and then proceed to tell him? One was a fling and the other (boring, got no time for her, practically a Grandpa) Darcy.
I think it would have been funnier to see her have the baby earlier and actually try and cope with it. But, I do forget that she is actually a spoilt, rich girl who can't even take care of herself.
Yes, they laughed at the Hipsters and I did enjoy that, but then I realised that it's because they (writer, characters) can't embrace change. BJ is stuck in the last century. Please don't let her out again.
