Review of Bridget Jones's Baby (2016) by Yaminah A — 28 Nov 2016
???
A welcome return of a beloved character, Bridget Jones' Baby is a funny and cheesy third installment of the feel-good romantic comedy franchise. By exploiting the success formula which made the first two movies so hilarious and down-to-earth, this Renee Zellweger-vehicle delivers more of the same in order to please its huge fan-base. Successfully relating to the fact that 15 years has passed since the second movie, the misfortunes or Bridget are formidably adapted for her character and will certainly make you laugh at them.
Forty three and single again, Bridget tries to remain cool and trendy at her work while searching for a new match that could give a meaning to her life. When she hooks up with the stranger Jack (Patrick Dempsey) at a festival, followed by a one-night stand with her former biggest love Mark (Colin Firth), she get knocked-up with no idea who the father of her baby is. Needless to say, this leads to multiple funny situations that will make you smile or "face palm" yourself. As it could be expected Zellweger is at her best as Bridget and her chemistry with Colin Firth is still ongoing. Patrick Dempsey is a nice new addition to the cast, but the most entertaining of all is Shirley Henderson who teams up perfectly with Bridget for a true girl-team.
Of course Bridget Jones' Baby does not come without its flaws. By using the same successful formula, the story is certainly less inspiring and it feels a bit "been there, seen that". Furthermore, the level of embarrassment which Bridget has to go through is so cruel and so much that at some point you might also feel embarrassed when watching the movie.
Nevertheless, Sharon Maguire's delivery is surprisingly good and sweet for a third installment in a comedy series. It will definitely please the fans of Bridget and it might win some new female fans among the younger audiences. Fine for watching at home or for a romantic date out at the cinema (even though the men watching this movie might be quite bored).
