Review of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) by Tammie K — 24 Mar 2011
There's no denying Renee Zellweger is an amazing talent and played the hell out of the role of Bridget Jones in 2001's Bridget Jones' Diary, but there isn't an ounce of fun to be found in the mind-numbing sequel. Sure, Zellweger is still charming as plus-size singleton Bridget Jones, but she's saddles with a script that settles for cheap crass.
In The Edge of Reason, Bridget is treated as a complete joke. First she begins to suspect that her lawyer boyfriend Mark Darcy (newly Oscar-ed Colin Firth) is cheating and so she promptly take to stuffing her face. 'Estimated weight,' she marks in her diary, '4,000 pounds.' Uh huh. Director Beeban Kidron, in for Sharon Maguire, drains all of the charm and wit, replacing it with gross out gags and pratfalls that simply don't work. Hugh Grant generates the most laughs as Daniel, Jones' chubby chaser with a fetish for her large panties. But it's too late, the movie sinks like a stone in manure, and apt description given the scene in which Bridget sky-dives into a pig sty.
