Review of Bridge of Spies (2015) by Sparklesgar — 11 Nov 2015
While I definitely enjoyed this movie, it reeked of Spielberg: overly sentimental, lots of long meaningful glances and pauses. Music added to emphasize: important moment! sad moment! triumphant moment! Characters very one-note.
I am reminded of how I was laughing so hard at the obvious sentimentality of A.I. that I actually had to leave the theater. Agree with another reader that we don't care much about what happens to the spies.
One could argue that it's not about them but about the main character, James Donovan, but he is so flat and solid in his convictions as to be unbelievable, even played by Tom Hanks who I do think is a great actor.
And what a waste of Amy Ryan playing a suburban housewife though I am glad she is getting some mainstream attention.
