Review of Bridesmaids (2011) by Greg L — 28 Nov 2012
The best feature of the Judd Apatow comedy factory has always been its treatment of friendship among straight men, the warmth, understanding, and easy verisimilitude with which it depicts these relationships serving as a perfect counterpoint to the sometimes crude humor of the jokes.
Until now it has never managed to successfully apply the same formula to friendships between women, but perhaps because it was scripted by female writers, "Bridesmaids" finally breaks that unfortunate trend.
Though it relies on raunch and frequently squirm-inducing cringe comedy for its many laughs, the movie never loses its affection for its characters, and that's what makes the sweet, affirming payoff work.
Hopefully Wiig, Rudolph, McCarthy, and company will get to make additional movies together, because they are every bit as funny and endearing as Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, and company.
