Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by Patrick B — 23 Jul 2010
I guess it depends on what you prefer. The original was darker and more serious. This one is campier and faster paced. I prefered the original. I do like campy horror films, but this one just felt like a ho-hum sequel to me.
Aside from the scene involving the blind hermit, and of course, the end scene when the Bride screams in fright, there's nothing in this film that stands out. The original had way more going for it.
I also didn't care for how the monster was able to talk. It felt kind of cheap to me like Karloff was wanting to do more in the sequel. I know that in the book the monster talks, but there, he's a fully developed character.
Here... not so much. I enjoyed "Bride of Frankenstein" alright, but I'll definitely take the original film over this one.
