Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by Alex V — 29 May 2008
One of my all-time favorite films and quite simply, in my view, the best Universal classic horror film out there. Directed by the great James Whale, the film picks up right where the original left off, with the Monster being pursued by angry villagers.
Boris Karloff resumes his role as the Monster, and even gets some lines of dialogue in this one! Colin Clive returns as Dr. Henry Frankenstein, being lured back to his necromantic work by the maniacal Dr.
Pretorious, played to perfection by Ernest Thesiger. A phenomenal score and a memorable scene where the Monster finds refuge in a blind man's hut in the middle of the woods paint a very moving picture of how Whales, as a gay man, may have felt at times in his life.
Outstanding, classic film.
