Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by Tristan P — 16 Jul 2008
As with the 1931 original, I've always felt that James Whale's BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN was a somewhat over-praised film. I also agree with Karloff that it was a mistake to give the monster dialogue (at least in the context of this film.
.. his dialogue in FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN should have been left it!!!). Again, please do not miscontrue: I love this film and recognize it's beauty. There's just something very off-putting to me about James Whale's films, a kind of smugness, perhaps, that makes me long for the unabashed approach of, say, GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN.
