Review of Bride of Frankenstein (1935) by Eric C — 14 Dec 2012
Here we have the very first sequel ever that was better than the original film. James Whale does a fantastic job at continuing his unique look at the classic novel and play that the films are based off of. The camera work is incredible and definitely a step up from the previous film. The acting is somewhat the same, but better in some areas and the style is changed enough to evoke a mix feeling from the original film.
Boris Karloff, Colin Clive and Dwight Frye(as a new character)return from the original film and really improve on an already perfect performance in the original. There is one scene I really enjoyed, the Hermit scene with Karloff, the emotion and score in that scene is phenomenol. If the Academy Awards were around that scene by itself would win an Oscar all by itself.
The use of comedy in the film helps to improve on the quality of the film. The score if great and memorable(its also the first score I ever listened to on the cassette player). Uno O'Connor(I believe that's how you spell her name)really creates a sense of fun in the film. She is off the walls funny with her reactions. Ernest Thesiger plays a great opposite for Colin Clive redeemed Dr. Frankenstein. Dr. Pretorious is a villain to contend with.
This film is available on the Monster Legacy set I purchased just like the first film is given a great selection of special features. A commentary and documentary that is great all its own. There has been mentioned a huge amount of deleted scenes that have yet to be uncovered and if they were to ever uncover them I would be first in line to purchase a new edition.
5 out of 5.
