Review of Bride of Chucky (1998) by Tonypolito — 18 Aug 2010
Certainly not a product that ought be anywhere inside my window of appreciation. However closer inspection reveals this to be, not a true attempt at horror, but rather a campy, cheesy, subtle satiric send-up of the earlier Chucky films.
And it's sprinkled with clever and/or tongue-in-cheek tributes to the entire genre as well. When Chucky pelts John Ritter to death with a pneumatic nail-gun, wah-lah, heeeere's Pinhead!
By Act 2, I was totally sold - when the requisite pair of ingenue teenagers parked their decal-covered love wagon in front of a Niagara Falls wedding chapel sporting a neon-haloed Virgin Mary in the front lawn!
And when the young lovers discover they're drive-in double-dating with a pair of psychotic, murderous dolls, Chucky tells them "if this were a movie, it would take three or four sequels to explain it!" That even though Chucky found all the answers he needed in his personal copy of "Voodoo For Dummies," the bad pun intended.
Tilly and other bit players deliver the usual teen-titillating erotic content well. And most of the murder scenes are so innovative and over-the-top they can't be mistaken for any less than tribute.
Aka Chucky Gets Lucky, number 4 in the series.
RECOMMENDATION: This is directorially intentioned camp done oh so well, so relish it when the mood for such strikes.
