Review of Brick Mansions (2014) by Jason K — 23 Mar 2015
A big mess of a movie that leaves you wandering why it was even made in the first place. This film has a boat load of problems and I will start by saying that the action sequences are so choppily edited and poorly shot that my eyes stun a few times during the movie.
When I found out the director was also the editor of terrible action films such as Transporter 3, Columbiana, and Taken 2, it gave me reason on why the action scenes are really poorly shot and I don't understand why he keeps editing films the way he does because his style is uninspired, lazy, and tasteless.
With the choppy editing, you also get unnecessary slow motion and it added to crappiness that the film had to offer. Besides the poorly done action, the film also has your stupid stereotypical plot on having the protagonists try to stop the villain from using a rocket to destroy the whole city and it wasn't handled in any kind of style or substance to make me care about what was happening on screen.
The acting for the most part is just terrible to say the least. It is truly sad what happened to Paul Walker and it is also sad that this is one of his last films. His performance here isn't terrible but it wasn't great either and I wished that I cared for his character more.
I thought he brought something to his character as Brian O' Conner in the Fast and Furious franchise but here, he was just going through the motions. David Belle does show that he is a great stuntman here, but he never showed any real acting abilities here and his character was just a cardboard cutout.
Rza as the main villain has to be one of the weakest I have ever seen in a long time and his performance was nothing but bland and wooden throughout. He probably is a nice guy in real life but he should just stop being in movies because he can't act worth a damn in anything I have seen him in.
Besides those things, the movie just felt like a waste of my time and it was generic Hollywood film making from start to finish. The only thing I can complement are the stunts. If the movie was actually filmed properly and had a better script, this could have been a really entertaining action film and not a poorly done mess.
