Review of Brick Lane (2007) by Douglas W — 13 Dec 2007
These are rich and complex characters beautifully played. The film is a strong feminist story of grief, alienation and love of all kinds. Nazneen is beautiful and flawed but intelligent enough to make sense of it all.
The crushing scene when she finds out about her sister is affecting and her hopeless despair at her husband's financial troubles is well nuanced. Her husband is played with great humour and breadth, bringing sympathy to the role.
The music too is very good.
