Review of Brick (2006) by Michael Z — 30 Sep 2012
A noir set in a high school. Does it work? Usually.
It helps that it has some very cool characters and equally slick (if a bit contrived) dialogue to accompany the sharp, twisty narrative. The film wobbles without much grace between being absorbing and personal to being cold and distant. Ultimately though, Rian Johnson's skillful direction is just enough to meet the film's heighty ambitions.
*2.5/4*.
