Review of Brick (2006) by Jennifer P — 23 May 2010
Debated giving this 3.5 stars because the dialogue and the drama feel somehow too contrived and sophisticated for a high school setting. Even Brendan seems like too perfect an antihero with how effortlessly he can topple all the biggest adversaries, and at the same time win their trust.
It's his moments of weakness with Emily that pushed me up that second half-star though; underneath it all runs a love that borders on obsession, and that motivates him to expose the fact that all these characters, for all their polished facades, are just as weak and selfish and alone as he is.
Cinematography, editing, scoring are all brilliant; overall gave me this strange unsettled aura of not only the loss but the corruption of innocence reminiscent of another indie movie that I can't put my finger on (Virgin Suicides, maybe?).
Good one, but took a couple watches for it to really sink in.
