Review of Brick (2006) by Mikey M — 16 May 2011
Fascinating teen-noir film that feels ever so slightly implausible. The razor-sharp script combines nicely with the style, and makes this film irresistible viewing. But while it innovatively straddles two genres (a cross between Chinatown and Gregory's Girl), the implausibility sprouts from that innovation.
The seemingly mis-populated social structure and the cross-over of genres annoyingly removes me from my suspension of disbelief and reminded me of my futile attempts as a child to force the opposing polar ends of two magnets together.
While that makes it a fascinating piece theoretically, it hampers the ability to engage whole-heartedly with the narrative.
