Review of Brick (2006) by Kerry M — 28 Oct 2011
A hard-boiled detective, the lovely femme fatal, a gritty underworld filled with shady players, and.... high school? Brick has a gimmick--be a film noir of the past, but place it in a contemporary high school setting.
Everyone talks right out of the 1940s and modern technology is almost non-existant (one person seems to own a cell phone), but it is a jarring film aesthetic that works for the most part. Writer/Director Rian Johnson seems to know how wacky it translates to be and seems to have fun with the idea (these are kids), but he still manages to keep the tension high and the mystery engrossing.
